The Project - H2O vita est - Water is life

Water is a vital resource for humanity, playing a crucial role in many aspects of our lives. It is essential to the survival of all living organisms, including humans, animals and plants. Without water, life as we know it would not exist. Hence the title of our school project: H2O vita est, which means "Water is life" in Latin. Water is also crucial to agriculture, providing the moisture needed for plant growth and food production. Water has many other uses, notably in industry (e.g. manufacturing, mining, nuclear power generation), transport (waterways) and leisure (fishing, swimming, boating, scuba diving).

But despite its importance, access to clean, healthy water remains a challenge for many people around the world. In 2024, over 2 billion people had no access to clean, safe drinking water. Lack of access to water can lead to drought, famine, disease and even conflict over resources. It is therefore essential that we manage this resource sustainably to ensure its availability for future generations. We understand that a school project (Pé) around the subject of water is crucial and essential to all members of the school community. Its importance cannot be overstated, hence the need for our students to learn how to manage this vital resource in a sustainable way to ensure its availability for future generations.

Objectives/expected results

In concrete terms, Pé aims to raise the school community's awareness of water conservation and encourage students to take responsibility for the environment.

Develop critical thinking about the importance, management and use of water
- Understand the value of water in our daily lives
- Raise awareness of water conservation within the school community
- Take responsibility for the environment
- Reduce our household water footprint
- Develop solutions for good water management
- Analyze the links between climate change and freshwater availability (drinking water and sanitation)
- Protect and restore local aquatic ecosystems
- Conduct chemical analyses of river water
- Reduce the spread of chemical pollutants in plastics between sea and river
- Pass on our know-how and skills to the public

Actions
Pé's actions are defined in three pillars:

Project week: S1 to S3 students will be involved in raising awareness, while S4 students will be subjected to interdisciplinary work.
School outings and visits to companies involved in drinking water treatment, water management and transport, wastewater treatment or hydroelectric power generation; S4 students will be involved.
Long-term projects to create a closed-loop ecosystem: construction of a pond,
hydroponics, which consists in growing plants in water with essential nutrients, without soil or growing media; construction of aquaponics, an integrated farming system combining aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics.
Participation in the "EIMAB4Nature" group, which brings together students and teaching and non-teaching staff to work on one or more projects. Participation in a group is optional for students from S4 upwards, and operates on a purely autonomous basis in terms of commitment and organization. The groups are committed to a variety of projects, including pond development, hydroponic system construction, the creation of an extracurricular learning space, fruit and vegetable cultivation and greenhouse construction.

School project - Lëtzebuerg - Europa via Mersch

Objectives:

  • support pupils in the transition phase to the new accredited European international school
  • encourage open-mindedness and European awareness among pupils
  • bring to life the fundamental principles of the European ideal and educate pupils to become responsible European citizens
  • establish the autonomy and identity of the new accredited European international school

Implementation:

The "Lëtzebuerg - Europa via Miersch" - LCD Mersch goes EIMAB school project aims to support our students in the transition phase from a traditional high school (LCD) to an accredited European school.students in the transition phase from a traditional high school (LCD) to an accredited European school.

The pre-phase is devoted entirely to preparing for this change, both in terms of a new "international" school community and a new full-time school system (timetable and subjects).

The focus will be on the European idea and democratic values.

In the pre-phase, our efforts will focus in particular on

  • planning and staging the Europe Day event
  • exchanges with and between other accredited European schools at national and European level
  • analysis of needs with a view to developing new curricula in the options (e.g. the "climate protection" discipline, already in existence in Denmark, Italy and France)
  • the development of European signage for our school facilities (EU Branding)
  • collaboration with the Maison de l'Europe, the European Commission Representation in Luxembourg and the Zentrum für politische Bildung (ZpB) foundation
  • preparation of the 'Europa - Verstehen' project (Schwarzkopf Stiftung: Junges Europa)
creation of a school parliament "Forum Altiero Spinelli" (students-parents-staff)
